Matagorda Texas, A Vacation Guide

In between Corpus Christi and Houston is Matagorda Bay. If you want a weekend away and don't have time to drive to the South coast Matagorda Bay is close. Below is a weekend guide to explore the area.

Matagorda Beach

At the end of FM 2031 you will find a really nice beach access with parking, bathrooms, and outdoor showers, You can drive on the beach with a permit, check local stores for these. A 4X4 vehicle is recommended from beach crusing due to the soft sand at Matagorda. If you want to fish there are alot of local spots, this map will help you pinpoint each. You can surf fish anywhere along the beach for redfish, drum, and even flounder. Here is the TPWD fishing report to help you know what to look for and where.

If you want to make a weekend of it, Matagorda Beach allows tent camping for up to 72 hours. You can bring kites, set up beach games like horseshoes, and if it's really sunny look into a small cover or pop up tent to offer a shade station.

Matagorda Fishing Charters

If you are looking for a great day of fishing for redfish, drum, sheepshead or flounder you can take a guided fishing trip on a smaller boat or charter a boat more for sportfishing. Matagorda Bay is one of Texas largest Estuaries and offers miles of fishing grounds. You can compare 1/2, 3/4 or full day charters here. Some boats will provide complementary catch cleaning and filleting, bait and reels. Make sue to bring drinks and snacks, sun screen, a nice UV proof shirt if you go during summer, and some dramamine if you get seasick.

Spend A Day At Matagorda Bay Nature Park

A little something for everyone here, swimming, fishing pier, and a nature trail. If you have time, they have a gift shop and a miniature golf course. For camping there are RV sites, standard campsite, and 4 airstream trailers available to reserve that sleep up to 4. Also beach bungalos that include a kitchen and sleep 6 or 8. If you are just in for the day, you can picnic at one of the tables, use their grills. Showers and restrooms are on site. The host events like beach walk and kayak tours or rent your own kayak and explore the surrounding wetlands. The park is open for day use from sunrise to sunset.

Check Out The Boutique Shops

Matagorda has some cute boutique and antique shops. Check out the Beached Whale on Fisher Street for some unique finds or stop in at Cattails and have an iced honey latte. The Matagorda Shoppe is your fun beach souvenier stop with koozies and t-shirts.

Where To Eat

Pop in to Stanleys General Store for pre or post beach fare like burgers, chicken tender baskets, and fried shrimp and oysters at Gordas Grill located inside Stanleys.
